Black Mountain is located within the local government area of Shire of Noosa (previously Sunshine Coast Region).
The area is located slightly inland from Cooroy and Pomona and has great views of the surrounding area. The area is named (1998) after a prominent mountain feature, a high point with a number of communication towers serving the Noosa Hinterland region. The local population in 2011 was 1175. Black Mountain has many artists studios and a number of specialised rural businesses.
The widening, addition of lanes and extension of the Bruce Highway has opened up faster access from Brisbane to Black Mountain, Pomona and nearby Federal.
